What is a Stroke? A stroke, sometimes called a "brain attack," occurs when blood flow is cut off from a portion of the brain. When this happens, brain cells in that area are deprived of oxygen and begin to die. Depending on the area of the brain affected, this could result in memory loss or impaired muscle function. These symptoms could be temporary or long-lasting.

Dr. Charles Shamoun, RN, shared research on stroke caregivers, who reported an average of 6.5 unmet social needs. Discussion focused on caregiver education, hospital discharge challenges, communication gaps, and support resources.

Stroke Awareness Month presentation covering stroke risk factors, prevention, warning signs, BEFAST, healthy lifestyle habits, the MIND diet, and reducing the risk of future strokes. Includes discussion of stroke experiences, recovery, and brain health.

Cane and Able celebrated its 44th anniversary with a five-course dinner, a look back at the group's history, a tribute to members who have passed, a lively sing-along, and plenty of time for friendship, conversation, and fellowship.

Elder Law Attorney Gene Richards discussed Michigan’s new Financial Power of Attorney Form and its potential impact on Medicaid with the Cane and Able Stroke Recovery Group. Many examples were given, which were supplemented by questions from the audience.

Andrew Parrish and Cheryl LaFleur of the CNS Healthcare Empowerment Team presented "Grief and Loss: What It Is, How to Cope." They explored the stages and myths of grief, healthy coping strategies, ways to support others, and the importance of resilience. The compassionate presentation offered practical guidance and hope for anyone navigating loss and life's many transitions.

Bob Richardson introduced the redesigned CaneAndAble.org website, highlighting its new features and resources for stroke survivors and caregivers. He also shared practical tips on internet safety and security before wrapping up with an engaging Q&A session.

Rochelle Kelley, CPA, presented practical tax tips for the 2025 filing season, covering new tax law changes, planning opportunities, and important items to consider. She also answered both pre-submitted and live questions from members during the Zoom session.

Macy Shupp and Brent Zahn from Corewell Health discussed common health conditions that can affect stroke recovery, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart failure, anemia, depression, and dementia. They explained how managing these conditions through lifestyle changes, medications, and regular medical care can improve recovery and reduce the risk of future strokes.

Malkia Newman and Andrew Parrish from CNS Healthcare delivered an engaging and insightful presentation titled “Taking Care of You.” They explored how stress impacts mental, physical, and emotional health—and emphasized the importance of self-care for mind, body, and spirit. Through real-life stories and interactive discussion—both in person and via Zoom—they shared practical self

Charles Shamoun, RN, of Henry Ford Hospital, discussed post-stroke fatigue and the many physical, neurological, emotional, and lifestyle factors that affect energy after a stroke. He shared practical strategies for managing fatigue through healthy habits, teamwork with healthcare providers, and support from family and caregivers. Members gathered at the elegant Italian American Cultural Center to celebrate 43 years of friendship, support, and community. The evening featured a delicious dinner, fellowship, and a look back at Cane and Able's history, accomplishments, and lasting impact on stroke survivors and their families.

Attorney Gene Richards presented "Updates in Elder Law: Issues to Consider," explaining recent changes to Michigan's Uniform Power of Attorney and answering questions from both in-person and Zoom participants. Using realistic examples based on actual situations, he demonstrated how the wording of legal documents can significantly affect outcomes. The session was both practical and highly informative.

Megan Walter, PT, DPT, presented an overview of Vivistim®, an innovative FDA-approved therapy designed to help stroke survivors regain arm and hand function by combining vagus nerve stimulation with rehabilitation. She explained how the treatment works, who may be a candidate, and what patients can expect during therapy. Members also had the opportunity to ask numerous questions during an informative Q&A session.

Charles Shamoun, RN, CNRN, presented "Healthy Relationships After Stroke," exploring how stroke can affect relationships with spouses, family members, friends, and caregivers. The session concluded with members sharing their personal experiences and insights. To protect participants' privacy, that discussion has been omitted from the video.

Rochelle Kelley, CPA, shared practical tax tips for the 2024 filing season, highlighting common deductions, planning strategies, and answers to frequently asked questions. She also responded to additional questions from members during the live Zoom discussion.

Nancy Susick, President of Corewell Health Beaumont Hospital, Troy, made a surprise visit to the Cane and Able Stroke Recovery Group to share updates from the hospital and answer members' questions. The informal discussion provided attendees with a unique opportunity to hear directly from hospital leadership.

Kari Haefner, Stroke Program Coordinator at Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital, shared an update on the hospital's stroke program, including the certification process with The Joint Commission and recent improvements in patient satisfaction. She also answered a wide range of questions from attendees during an engaging Q&A session.
