Neurologist Dr. Andrea Rossi discussed cognitive impairment and dementia risk after stroke and reviewed Life’s Essential 8—practical steps involving diet, exercise, sleep and other health factors that support brain and heart health.

Certified Exercise Physiologist Graci Multhaupt explained how regular exercise supports heart health, demonstrated safe ways to begin an exercise program, reviewed stress testing and cardiac rehabilitation, and answered questions about staying active after cardiac events.

Danielle DeMeere of Hot Mess Express shared how cleaning and organizing can restore safety, dignity, and peace of mind for individuals and families facing illness, disability, grief, or other life challenges. She discussed practical strategies for reducing clutter-related stress and explained how volunteers provide judgment-free support to help people regain independence and hope.

Occupational therapist Joyce Flugge, OTR, shared practical techniques to help stroke survivors and others improve hand function and independence. She discussed joint protection, adaptive equipment, splinting, home exercises, and ergonomic strategies to reduce strain, increase comfort, and make everyday tasks easier. The presentation concluded with an informative question-and-answer session.

Following a brief group update, members divided into separate discussions for stroke survivors and caregivers. In a safe and supportive environment, participants shared personal challenges, celebrated successes, exchanged practical advice, and encouraged one another. The conversations reflected the caring community that makes the Cane and Able Stroke Recovery Group so special.

Dr. Charles Shamoun, RN, shared research on stroke caregivers, who reported an average of 6.5 unmet social needs. Discussion focused on caregiver education, hospital discharge challenges, communication gaps, and support resources.

Stroke Awareness Month presentation covering stroke risk factors, prevention, warning signs, BEFAST, healthy lifestyle habits, the MIND diet, and reducing the risk of future strokes. Includes discussion of stroke experiences, recovery, and brain health.

Cane and Able celebrated its 44th anniversary with a five-course dinner, a look back at the group's history, a tribute to members who have passed, a lively sing-along, and plenty of time for friendship, conversation, and fellowship.

Elder Law Attorney Gene Richards discussed Michigan’s new Financial Power of Attorney Form and its potential impact on Medicaid with the Cane and Able Stroke Recovery Group. Many examples were given, which were supplemented by questions from the audience.

Andrew Parrish and Cheryl LaFleur of the CNS Healthcare Empowerment Team presented "Grief and Loss: What It Is, How to Cope." They explored the stages and myths of grief, healthy coping strategies, ways to support others, and the importance of resilience. The compassionate presentation offered practical guidance and hope for anyone navigating loss and life's many transitions.

Cane and Able members, friends, and supporters gathered at Buddy’s Pizza for a fundraiser benefiting the group. Whether dining in, carrying out, or meeting with others, participants enjoyed good food, fellowship, and support for the organization.

Bob Richardson introduced the redesigned CaneAndAble.org website, highlighting its new features and resources for stroke survivors and caregivers. He also shared practical tips on internet safety and security before wrapping up with an engaging Q&A session.

Cheyenne, Clancy, Dune, and Trowa from GO TEAM Therapy Dogs, along with their handlers, gave a presentation outlining the organization's history and current activities. Of course, the dogs were the hit of the afternoon!

Members gathered for an open discussion to share their experiences as stroke survivors and caregivers. In a supportive and encouraging environment, participants celebrated successes, discussed challenges, exchanged practical advice, and offered one another understanding, hope, and encouragement. It was a meaningful reminder that no one has to face the stroke journey alone.

Rochelle Kelley, CPA, presented practical tax tips for the 2025 filing season, covering new tax law changes, planning opportunities, and important items to consider. She also answered both pre-submitted and live questions from members during the Zoom session.

Macy Shupp and Brent Zahn from Corewell Health discussed common health conditions that can affect stroke recovery, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart failure, anemia, depression, and dementia. They explained how managing these conditions through lifestyle changes, medications, and regular medical care can improve recovery and reduce the risk of future strokes.
