Potluck in the Park
Our annual Potluck in the Park is a favorite of everyone. Hot dogs cooked on the grill, supplemented by more condiments and side dishes than you can count, plus desserts, are the formal part of the afternoon. But the reason people enjoy it so much is the friendships, new and existing, that are created.

Corewell Health Foundation Overview
Tom McGannon from the Corewell Health Foundation explained how the foundation raises and distributes funds to support patients, programs, and community health initiatives. He highlighted partnerships with local organizations, including the Children's Miracle Network, Project SEARCH, and Project LAUNCH, as well as outreach efforts that bring health education and screenings to underserved communities.

Taking Back Your Energy
Charles Shamoun, RN, of Henry Ford Hospital, discussed post-stroke fatigue and the many physical, neurological, emotional, and lifestyle factors that affect energy after a stroke. He shared practical strategies for managing fatigue through healthy habits, teamwork with healthcare providers, and support from family and caregivers. Lunch and Bocce!
Members gathered for an optional lunch before heading to the bocce courts for an afternoon of friendly competition. Using three lanes at Palazzo di Bocce, everyone enjoyed spirited games, plenty of laughter, and great conversation. It was a fun, relaxed outing that combined fellowship, recreation, and a little healthy competition.

Safety and Security Online and Offline
Bob Richardson introduced a presentation on today's most common internet and real-world scams, offering practical tips for recognizing and avoiding fraud. Technical issues prevented the accompanying slides from being shown, so the complete presentation will be rescheduled for a future meeting.

43rd Anniversary Dinner
Members gathered at the elegant Italian American Cultural Center to celebrate 43 years of friendship, support, and community. The evening featured a delicious dinner, fellowship, and a look back at Cane and Able's history, accomplishments, and lasting impact on stroke survivors and their families.

Buddy's Fundraiser for Cane and Able
Members and friends supported the Cane and Able Stroke Recovery Group during a fundraiser at Buddy's Pizza in Shelby Township. Proceeds help fund educational speakers, engaging activities, and special events such as our Anniversary and Holiday Dinners. Thank you to everyone who participated and made the event a success.

Go Team Therapy Dogs
Members enjoyed a heartwarming visit from Go Team Therapy Dogs and their dedicated volunteer handlers. After learning about the organization's mission, members spent time interacting with the friendly, well-trained therapy dogs. Go Team volunteers provide comfort and emotional support in hospitals, schools, assisted living communities, airports, and other settings where a caring presence can make a difference. It was a joyful and uplifting experience for everyone who attended.

Updates in Elder Law
Attorney Gene Richards presented "Updates in Elder Law: Issues to Consider," explaining recent changes to Michigan's Uniform Power of Attorney and answering questions from both in-person and Zoom participants. Using realistic examples based on actual situations, he demonstrated how the wording of legal documents can significantly affect outcomes. The session was both practical and highly informative.

Vivistim Neurotechnology and Stroke Rehab
Megan Walter, PT, DPT, presented an overview of Vivistim®, an innovative FDA-approved therapy designed to help stroke survivors regain arm and hand function by combining vagus nerve stimulation with rehabilitation. She explained how the treatment works, who may be a candidate, and what patients can expect during therapy. Members also had the opportunity to ask numerous questions during an informative Q&A session.
